The Oozical Method

The aims of the show are to connect curious audiences in dialogue with real scientists. No characters, just a team of people ready to support the illustration of answers to scientific questions.

The show is, therefore, required to use improv as the basis for construction, with short form game elements being joined together into a longer form narrative where the concepts go from theory to practice over the course of the show.

The flexibility of improv as the basis of the show means that the show can be formed around a specific guest (and thus – topic) contribute to an explanation that is rendered in physicality, props, dance, live drawing and song.

Artists on stage:
Improvised Explanation
Improvised Movement
Improvised Scenes
Improvised Music/Singing
Improvised lighting

Puppeteering

Show Structure

THE BIG DIFFICULT THING – The audience suggest and vote on a big thing that could be done within a topic

CAST QUALIFIER – The cast step backwards if they are very confident in the specifics, forward if less so, then line up from least to most to say “To do [BIG THING] we’ll have to (concept)” until there is a clear path from concept to implementation.

CAST ANNOUNCE GAME: (Game Types)
[Early Show]
– Big Experiment – A very basic concept is demonstrated with a description big experiment
– Observations – Audience members are selected to make observations about a phenomenon – cast members play a classic improv game like three headed expert to relay these observations to the audience – or rhyme – or song
– Characterise a concept – making a story out of a concept which involves development, replaying scenes with improvements of the concept (naive replay games may be helpful here?)
[Mid Show]

[End Show]
Improvised Musical Summarising the show – audience involvement and big finish

Programmes/Stickers drawn during show so audience members can take home a memory and maybe remember to come again.

Example

THE BIG DIFFICULTT THING – Go to Mars
CAST QUALIFIER – Understand gasses/ How do we keep Humans Alive/ How do we make enough energy to Blast of / Where shall we launch from?

  • What are gasses? – Cast demonstrate atom arrangements in solids, liquids and gasses physically distancing themselves, showing how energy moves through them (waves and wave theory?) – Smoke Cannon
  • How do we keep Humans Alive – Replay scenes where the main character is locked in a room (mime) and players add things to keep them alive, or replay the scene once the character dies to keep them alive this time
  • How do we make enough energy to Blast off? Observations? Look at some reactions and try to find the most explosive – audience observations then (3 headed/Song/Rhyme/Shakespeare)
  • Where shall we launch from – Live Drawing – demonstration that there is not just one good answer but several answers may be suitable.
